Dingy kitchen? Is that backsplash filled with grease stains and burn marks? Have you mismatched appliances? Maybe those drawers and cabinet knobs are loose and broken. Kitchens see a lot of wear and tear. This is normal.
Over the years, a kitchen will deal with all manners of liquids, foods, foot traffic, and accidental nicks and breaks. These small occurrences can be maintained for a time. Often, a microwave or other small appliance will need to be changed. Yet, after many years, it may be time for an entire remodel. Wood paneling may have been in the 1970s, but maybe you want a different look? Well, changing the walls requires the movement of all appliances and cabinets. This can be expensive and tedious if done piecemeal.

Things to Consider

  • Do I want a modern or classical look?
  • What am I willing to spend on cabinets?
  • What am I willing to spend on appliances? Which appliance is most important to me?
  • Flooring? Do I want wood, tile, ceramic, etc.?
  • Lighting? Do I want a bright, welcoming kitchen or a kitchen/dining room that feels warm?
  • How does my kitchen reflect the rest of my home?

Although you may want an extravagant looking kitchen, it is also important to consider the usefulness of the space. A granite style floor may look unique, but will you be okay with mopping a rougher surface? Countertops will need to match the style of the overall kitchen, but different materials react differently to different cleaning and food products. See our page on countertops for more information! Also, consider your high traffic areas. If your refrigerator barely allows enough room to squeeze by when it is opened, you may run into many frustrations in the future.

The Overhaul

A kitchen can define a home. It is usually visible from living spaces, dining rooms, or hallways. Changing the flooring from a living room to a kitchen can create more energy in your home. Lighting is a cheap way to liven up a kitchen. There are multiple varieties to fit whatever style you are aiming for. If you are working on a new construction, consider natural light sources. You may want extra space for a breakfast nook; adding a large window will bring natural light flowing into your space. Changing color schemes or even sink fixtures can alter the kitchen to your liking.

Kitchen Cabinets

Cabinets can be the most expensive part of a kitchen remodeling job. They are most often custom made and you must have then accurate to fit stoves and sinks in place. If it is not necessary to replace cabinets, it may be best to sand, finish, and add different paints to existing cabinets. Consider changing the cabinet doors and keeping the original cabinets. This will save a lot of money and help you add luster that may be missing without breaking the bank.
