The Fayard Project - Historic Home Transformation

The Fayard Project was a full interior and exterior renovation of an early 1900s home in Birmingham, Alabama. Over the years, the home had gone through several additions and updates, and the homeowners wanted to completely remodel the property while preserving the original character, age, and architectural style of the home.

On the exterior, SouthFace Renovation & Construction removed the existing metal siding and uncovered the original cedar siding underneath. Much of the cedar was still in good condition because it had been protected for many years. Where the original siding was damaged or rotted, we had custom cedar siding made to match the existing profile. Once the repairs were complete, the entire exterior was painted to give the home a fresh, restored look while staying true to its historic charm.

We also replaced all of the windows with tempered glass windows because of the home’s location near a golf course. The window trim and mounts were designed to match the period and style of the home. On the front porch, we replaced the tongue and groove flooring and added a custom dog gate built to match the existing handrails.

The interior of the home was completely remodeled as well. We removed walls to open the kitchen to the living room and added new walls where more privacy and function were needed. The floor plan was redesigned to make the home feel more open, efficient, and comfortable for modern living.

To preserve the historic feel of the home, we installed new flooring to match the early 1900s rift and quarter sawn hardwoods and refinished the existing hardwood floors to create a consistent look throughout the home. The bathrooms were updated with new cabinetry, tile, and plumbing fixtures. In the kitchen, we installed new cabinets, countertops, backsplash, and appliances.

The master closet was also expanded and upgraded with custom cabinetry, creating a much more functional space than the original layout allowed.

The finished renovation completely transformed the home while respecting its original character.
